A Re-Imagined Broadmoor West
- May 16, 2014 -
Don't Miss Out on the New Broadmoor West!

Broadmoor owner Philip Anschutz’s wife Nancy will christen a re-imagined Broadmoor West with the crack of a champagne bottle, much like the way Julie Penrose did when her husband Spencer Penrose opened the resort’s main building in 1918.

What do the words taste, tower, retreat and play all have in common? The Broadmoore-West is the answer.

Broadmoor West welcomes a brand new Adam D. Tihany-designed Italian restaurant. Set on the western edge of Cheyenne Lake, Ristorante del Lago will serve authentic regional Italian cuisine alongside a robust Italian wine list.

They added three stories with a total of 31 guest rooms, including four penthouse suites. Each one its own reason to explore and stay in the new Broadmoor West.

They redesigned and expanded the guest rooms with all-new, five-fixture marble baths and an updated look reflecting their signature Broadmoor luxury and comfort.

PLAY AT THE BROADMOOR is their new restaurant with activity center now open on the lobby level. Complete with dining and a six-lane bowling alley, it's perfect for a family fun night out or some friendly colleague competition.

FDA and Spent Grain from Brewers
- May 13, 2014 -
From Brewbound

Recent press releases discuss the FDA and the spent grain that comes from after the brewers are done brewing their beer. It has been donated or sold for hundreds of years and now the FDA is raising concerns.

Following is some text of the letter that Senators Collins and King, along with a bipartisan group of eleven of their colleagues, sent to the FDA.

We recognize the importance of food safety, but ask that the agency consider the economic effect of its effort to include so-called "spent grains" produced by brewers within the scope of the rule.

During the process of making beer, brewers heat grains to extract sugars, proteins, and other nutrients. These spent grains are a byproduct of this process and serve no useful purpose for the brewer. Since at least the Middle Ages, brewers have donated or sold (often for very little money) these spent grains to farmers, who may use them as feed for livestock. A recent study indicates that nearly 90 percent of spent grains produced by craft brewers is used for animal feed.

The Proposed Rule would effectively end this centuries-old practice. The cost of compliance with the rule would effectively prohibit brewers from providing spent grains to farmers for animal feed. These include costs to identify potential food safety hazards, estimate how likely they are to occur, predict how severe the effects would be, identify and implement preventative controls, monitor spent grains for any hazards, and develop a written recall plan. Inevitably, limiting a source of free, or nearly free, animal feed will mean additional costs for the farmers who use spent grains.

Rep. Carol Shea-Porter

“Local breweries, distilleries, and farmers around our district and around the country have engaged in this mutually beneficial relationship for hundreds of years,” Shea-Porter said in a statement. “Even President George Washington saw the benefits of feeding nutritious spent grains to his own livestock, providing Mount Vernon with feed for 150 pigs and 30 cows. It’s imperative that the FDA’s rules remain focused in their scope, and do not attempt to solve food safety problems that do not exist.”

Below are the full articles and locations to read more. Everyone should be kept up to speed with what is going on with the FDA and spent grain from breweries.
