A-B Buys Breckenridge Brewery - Can't Beat 'Em, Buy 'Em
- December 22, 2015 -
Wow - the things you can do if you have vats full of money...

Belgian brew giant InBev, owner of Anheuser-Busch among others, today announced that it was buying Breckenridge Brewing, most recently of Littleton, CO.

It is the third craft brewer purchase announced by the king of beers in the last five days. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the sale is expected to be wrapped in early 2016.

Chris Funari of Brewbound has a nice story here.

From the joint press release:

NEW YORK and LITTLETON, Colo. (December 22, 2015) Anheuser-Busch today announced it will acquire Colorado-based Breckenridge Brewery. With this agreement, Breckenridge Brewery is the seventh craft brewery to join The High End, Anheuser-Busch’s business unit of craft and import brands.

“We’re excited about the partnership and have been encouraged to continue on our path and become more innovative moving forward,” said Todd Usry, President of Breckenridge Brewery. “I’m a believer in what The High End is focused on accomplishing and we are flattered that our team was chosen to help guide that journey. We’re looking forward to utilizing resources like decades of research and brewing expertise as we continue to create new beers.”

Available in 35 states, Breckenridge Brewery will sell approximately 70,000 barrels of beer in 2015. The new brewery and Farm House restaurant in Littleton have positioned the brewery for future growth. The brewery will continue to make its unique portfolio of beers ranging from their Vanilla Porter, to Agave Wheat, to their core brands, seasonal specialties and barrel-aged beers.

“Breckenridge Brewery has a long history of innovation and they continue to brew new and exciting beers, from their specialty brews like the Mountain Series that celebrates the brewery’s origin as a ski town brewpub, to their planned nitro can series,” said Andy Goeler, CEO, Craft, The High End. “They are innovative and have built an amazing business that’s enabled them to get their great beers to fans across the country. We look forward to even more growth together.”

Breckenridge Brewery will join Goose Island Beer Company, Blue Point Beer Company, 10 Barrel Brewing, Elysian Brewing Company, Golden Road Brewing and Four Peaks Brewing Company as part of The High End’s craft beer portfolio.

The partnership includes the company’s new production brewery and Farm House restaurant in Littleton, and original brewpub and current innovation center in the mountain town of Breckenridge.

The current management group, Breckenridge-Wynkoop, will continue to own and operate its remaining businesses including: Ale House at Amato’s in Denver; Breckenridge Ale House in Grand Junction; Breckenridge Colorado Craft in Denver; The Cherry Cricket in Denver; Mainline in Fort Collins; Phantom Canyon Brewing Co. in Colorado Springs; and Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver.

Anheuser-Busch’s partnership with Breckenridge Brewery is expected to close in the first quarter of 2016, subject to customary closing conditions. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

First Beverage Group acted as financial advisor to Breckenridge Brewery, and Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, LLP provided legal counsel.

Growler Delivery Finished in Colorado Springs
- December 17, 2015 -
Alas, it was not to be.

Steve Stowell of Triple S Brewing was on to something, maybe something big. He had the blessing of Colorado Department of Revenue Liquor Enforcement to deliver beer from his brewpub in downtown Colorado Springs. What's not to like about that?

And yesterday, he delivered his first growler. It was also his last...

Wayne Heilman of the CS Gazette tells the story well.

Turns out that DOR was just kidding about being able to deliver beer using a brewpub license. "Gee, sorry Steve. Our bad." Triple S did make one delivery, and at least DOR didn't yank the license for that. But Steve's plan to bring growlers to your front door is scuttled for now.

Maybe DOR will see the light and re-write the regs to allow such activities. Let 'em know. They would love to hear your opinion.
Growler Delivery Comes to Colo. Spgs.
- December 11, 2015 -
Put this in the "why didn't they think of this before" category:

Triple S Brewing in downtown Colorado Springs plans to offer growler delivery to a limited area beginning Tuesday Dec. 15. Owner and Brewer Steve Stowell is the first to offer this service in the state, which will allow him to bring any of his on-tap beer selections right to your door.

“Think of us as the 'milkmen' of beer delivery," says Stowell. "We show up with new growlers and take your empty ones away for reuse.” The delivery area is small for now, and delivery times are limited, too: Tuesday through Thursday, 4PM to 9PM, in the 80903 ZIP code. An adult age 21 or older must be available to sign for the delivery.

Triple S is licensed as a brewpub, which has different restrictions on customer sales than a licensed brewery or manufacturer. Stowell has the blessing of Colorado Liquor Enforcement, and if the initial launch goes well he plans to expand the service. Who knows - if other brewpubs follow Steve's lead, maybe we'll all be opening the door to fresh beer delivery real soon.

Oldest Denver Brewery Now the Newest - Tivoli Rebirths!
- August 24, 2015 -
It's positively breathtaking to watch how many new breweries are opening their doors across Colorado.

Keeping up with openings is a challenge, and we know of at least 75 operations in planning that might (we said might) open in the next eighteen months. It can take a long time to plan and open a new brewery...

But 45 years must be the record. Shuttered since 1969, Tivoli Brewing in Denver re-opened this weekend. Located on the Metro State University campus, it will be home to a beer school, taproom and brewing operation that stretches back over 150 years.

Our friend Ed Sealover wrote a great article in the Denver Business Journal.

Check it out,
and then visit Denver's newest (and oldest) brewery for a time trip. Back to the future anyone?

GABF Tickets Go Fast - You Gotta Be Ready
- July 29, 2015 -
Tickets to this year's Great American Beer Festival go on sale at 10 AM Mountain Time, July 29.

You have to use this link and deal with ticket master's machine.

Go Early, and Good Luck!

Update at 10:14 AM:

We tried to buy tickets through the tm website.

At 10:03, with a request for 2 tickets on Friday night, we received the reply "Sorry, no tickets from venue currently...".

Is that possible? Sold Out in three minutes? And is "Sorry, no tickets from venue currently..." even English? What the hell does that mean?

We've still got one browser window open, and it keeps telling us the wait time is six minutes. Maybe we'll get lucky...

Update at 10:29

Got lucky with another browser window about 10:20. One Ticket - Good Thing. For a Designated Driver - not such a Good Thing. Cost us $33.75, available on August 7.

Tried a few more times to get a real ticket. Still no joy, but the English-as-a-foreign-language folks at tm at least fixed their grammar:

"Sorry, no tickets match your search."

One of us will see you and 20 thousand other fans there on Saturday night. Look for us sipping on the Tommyknocker Orange Soda...

Oskar Blues Buys Craft Brewery
- April 27, 2015 -
Apparently, scooping up craft breweries isn't strictly reserved for multi-national, super-conglomerates like In-Bev and SABMiller. Oskar Blues, the ever growing Colorado, and now North Carolina, craft brewery is getting in on the action.

From Drink Denver -

Colorado-based brewery Oskar Blues will continue its growth in the craft beer scene thanks to its recent purchase of Perrin Brewing Co., located in a small farming community 10 miles north of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Chad Melis, marketing director for Oskar Blues, has said that the collaboration will help the Colorado-based brewery sell more of its own brands in Michigan, where the demand for craft beer is already high. “Perrin Brewing and the Grand Rapids area have a great craft beer culture along with a similar love of the outdoors that makes us feel at home and has fueled taking collaboration to the next level.”

Brewery acquisitions often times leave a bad taste on the palate of craft beer drinkers. Let's hope Oskar Blues and Perrin can maintain their uniqueness and independence, and continue making killer beer.

Rye Fest 2015
- March 09, 2015 -
Rye the hell not! That was the general thought passed around between The Bob, Chain Reaction Brewing and Black Sky Brewery when the idea of putting on a small festival that would include only hand crafted brews with some type of rye addition.

As the 3 breweries met and put together ideas for the fest it was clear that Black Sky Brewery would be the perfect venue to host this first year event. Not only does Black Sky have the ability to accept all the beers entered into the festival they also have the ability to provide food and brew a unique collaboration beer specifically designed with rye fest in mind. Adding a collaboration element to this fest was an important feature since it will be held during Colorado Craft Beer week.

The collaboration beer will be a rye pale ale that used the additions of pale rye, flaked rye and crystal rye malts and a generous 30 minute continuous hopping using a special blend of various earthy and spicy hops that truly make this brew a 1 of a kind that will never be brewed again. Below you will find details about Rye Fest, if you have any additional question or would like to set up an interview about the fest just let me know.

The competition, which accepts homebrew entries at the breweries tap room from January 28th up until March 14th will follow rules and guidelines by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) and consists of a colossal “Best in Show” prize created by RFBC brewers Chase Engel and Jerod Day. 1st place, or “Best in Show,” will have the opportunity to brew their winning beer on RFBC’s commercial brew system with professional brewers, have their winning beer tapped in the tasting room and be entered into the Pro-Am Competition at GABF (Great American Beer Fest.) There will also be a 2nd and 3rd place with prizes to be determined. “There are so many great homebrewers in this valley and in this state that we wanted to celebrate their creativity by allowing them to showcase their brews in collaboration with us. We are really looking forward to getting together with other professional brewers and judges in the area for what will be a fun and exciting day of judging,” says Chase Engel, CEO and head brewer of Roaring Fork Beer Company.

RFBC has asked each homebrewer to limit their entries to up to five and will accept any style of beer as long as it follows the guidelines stated under the BJCP and AHA. Winners will be announced March 28th at Roaring Fork Beer Company’s one-year anniversary party. Winners do not need to be present at time of announcement but are encouraged to come enjoy the one-year celebration that the brewery has thoughtfully planned. A panel of professional brewers in Colorado as well as BJCP certified judges will be judging the submitted homebrews at Roaring Fork Beer Companies facility.

Freedom's Edge Brewery to Close Fort Collins Location
- January 21, 2015 -
"So after some lengthy family discussions we have come to the realization that our Ft. Collins brewery is just too small for our future plans and we are spreading ourselves much too thin as a result.

So we have made the decision to move out of our current building and redirect our attention to our distribution goals. We will be closing the brewery on Monday the 26th. Remember, our Cheyenne brewery is only a few short miles up I-25 if you get thirsty before we start distributing in foco! Come out for a few pints this week! Cheers!"

If you have an opportunity before they close on the 26th, stop in and have a brew!

Look for more information and follow the distribution routes on their website.
