New Belgium Brewing
@newbelgium
Today we’re announcing that New Belgium has agreed to join Little World Beverages USA, the US platform for Lion Kirin breweries, pending approval from our employee owners.

After that official tweet from the new New Belgium, the beer social media universe reached critical mass of discontent quickly.

(From Twitter)
  • Marco Cappellano @TheBigItalia
    Replying to @newbelgium

"Joining" as in selling out?? Sad! There goes the quality.

  • Jeff Miller @milpool13
This is extremely disappointing. I had held New Belgium in a higher standard than other smaller breweries. My mistake.

  • D Evans @MileHigh_L1FE
Total sellout move. Your entire brands story was just thrown in the dumpster with one greedy move. I thought you were a great example of how companies should be ran and organized but I guess a few people wanted the easy way out.

  • Charlie's Toupee @FullEcaypabull
Of all the breweries to sell out, you were the last I'd believe would do it. Your employee owned business model was a example of Hope in the corporate world of greed. Now you decided to side with the greedy. Shame on you. Enjoy watching your sales plummet and your reputation tank.

  • Lambeau Ron @LambeauRon
Not surprised you all have big smiles. That’s the world we live in. Money over integrity, loyalty, commitment and everything else.

  • Episteme @TheEpisteme
NOOOOOOO!! What the heck are you doing?!?! I toured one of your facilities; it was all about the culture and employees and being what you are. What the heck?!?

  • Chad Bushy™ @crb1
This is very unfortunate news, by moving this away from employee owned and local you have all but killed this brand. I am very sad to hear and see this happen. I sure hope someone with some sense puts a stop to this.

Others said, Congratulations on your Financial Success.

  • k~i~m @KimsBayBrews
Building something from an idea in the brain into a fully successful, operational endeavor maintained over years & years of market & cultural shifts is quite the endeavor and accomplishment. Congratulations on doing this and all the best to the team.

  • K. @SlickPropaganda
Can't be mad at business people cashing in.

  • Greg Marberry @Gmarb
I suppose this was inevitable given the trajectory of the company and consistent, excellent product. I hope you can impart your values on the parent organization as you’ve stated & continue to be a positive change agent in the world. Congrats & best of luck to all!

  • Megan Johnston @MeganJo70013766
All these folks judging new Belgium for “selling out”. They are probably texting from the iPhones while driving a Subaru that they fill at a Exxon station. We live in a capitalist society. This is how it works. Hypocrite/hipster mentality. Congrats to New Belgium for your success.

And others shared their mixed opinions.

  • diana reavis @ranadana1
To all my friends working at the Mothership, Congrats! 🍻 but I am a little sad too, bittersweet.

  • Pwilly @wayne_m_212
I don’t fault the New Belgium owners for getting a huge payday, much deserved for years of work. But as a consumer and supporter of craft breweries I will no longer buy New Belgium.

  • The Industrial Revolution @S_U_L_L_A
enjoy your millions of dollars man, you worked hard for it! That being said I will never drink your beer ever again. Bye

  • richDollaz @r33p04s
Big fan of the products...congrats on the milestone but I’ll likely stop buying if employee ownership is discontinued

A variety of commentary continued on other forms of social media as New Belgium made their announcement, overwhelmingly by disgruntled craft beer lovers.

(From Facebook)
  • Malcolm Young
"Pending approval of our employee owners"... Employees of New Belgium! Vote against this madness! You're sacrificing your long term work environment and well being in exchange for a short term payout. Please be informed of what happened to ballast point after they made this same mistake.

  • Mackenzie Tappy
So glad the employees are happy about their money but this kind of feels like a slap in the face to Colorado, a state that has proudly supported and overseen New Belgium’s success. Hmmm.

  • Shawn Gray
Very carefully worded. They’re going to “join” Little World Beverages which is a “US platform” for Kirin.
Translation: We are selling to a Japanese beverage giant. Really sad day for ESOPs.

  • James Allen
Really great run! Sad to see it end like this! I used to love to bring my friends from out of state to your Fort Collins brewery... I will no longer promote this business.

  • Niki Gerszewski
Sell outs!!! Bye bye good beer. They will change the formulas to make brewing cheaper.

Mixed in the negative responses were supporters and continuing fans of New Belgium.

  • Kevin C. Ashford
Love all these complainers. Congrats New Belgium employee owners, you have earned the right to financial success and freedom!

  • Rick Obenshain
At least it’s not AB/inbev! Keep making great beer, and I’ll keep being a loyal customer!

  • Jocelyn Fry
All the best to New Belgium and its employee owners in their new adventure!

  • Brian Ford
Congratulations!! Still remember drinking fresh Fat Tire at the Old Town Ale House back in the beginning in the 22oz. Labels were practically Elmers' glued on...Good for all of you guys!! Cheers.

  • Troy Mandery
Yay for NBB and it's employees. I would lay a bet that most of the complainers are NOT business owners. Capital is a real thing. Businesses need capital and the bigger you get as an independent the harder it is to maintain operating capital and even harder to get it through traditional channels like a bank. But hey, it's easier to jump on the bandwagon and complain without any idea of why they chose to do this. I'm a fan and unless the beer and great employees change then I'll stay a fan. Cheers to you New Belgium Brewing.

Boulder Beer, First Craft Brewer in US, Downsizing
- October 14, 2019 -
Iconic Boulder Beer, which earned US Craft Beer Manufacturer's License #1 in 1979, has announced that it will stop packaging their beer in cans, and focus on a smaller, more-local business model and clientele.

Jonathan Shikes (as always) has a great story in Westword. Long-time employees were still trying to soak in all the changes. Boulder will stop packaging and selling their beer in stores, sell off packaging and brewing equipment, and lay off about 20 of 50 employees before the end of the year.

They plan to focus on their taproom and operate as a brewpub only at their longtime Wilderness Place address in Boulder. Ownership, headed by Gina Day, was looking for ways to remain competitive in a cutthroat retail environment, and downsizing made the most sense. Day said in a statement: “Times have changed and change is hard, but...our friends will still be able to enjoy our beers in the brewpub, and by brewing in small batches, have a wider variety of options on the ever-rotating specialty taps. We’re celebrating our milestone fortieth anniversary this year and look forward to furthering our legacy in Boulder and the industry.”

Peaks 'n Pines New Fountain Brewery Opens
- August 23, 2019 -
It's been a long, $400,000+ slog for Teresa Viera to open the newest brewery in Colorado, at 212 W. Illinois Ave. in Fountain, Colorado. She celebrates this weekend with the grand opening of the second location for this Colorado Springs Brewery. Thank you, Stephanie Earls of the Gazette, for this fabulous story.

Weldwerks Reveals Springs Taproom Details
- August 14, 2019 -
You've been there, you know the joint - you walk in, there's that funky smell, every seat faces the wrong way, nobody looks happy, and wasn't this a Thai place before, and Tex-Mex before that? Is it cursed? A succession of earnest business efforts open and then close, the building sits vacant and forlorn for months at a time, and the only way to fix feng shui seems to be with a bulldozer.

The small, 110-year-old house at 3043 West Pikes Peak was such a spot. The last business there - called The Dive - served good food and took good care of customers, but closed like every other worthy effort before. Homeless campers staked out a claim behind the place after that.

But things change, and big changes are coming to 3043 West Pikes Peak.

Weldwerks Brewing, based in Greeley, has revealed details of their plans to construct a new taproom on Colorado Springs's westside. They'll use bulldozers, but they won't scrape the lot clean. Much of the old building will be retained, and then augmented with new, exciting additions.

This story in Craft Brewing Business, written by Chris Crowell, outlines what's ahead:

With the help of [au]workshop architects + urbanists, the WeldWerks team will flex their creative muscles to create a space that showcases their commitment to innovation and hospitality. The soon-to-be-named 1,300 sq ft facility will include an outdoor beer garden and a second-story treehouse-inspired patio with incredible views. Much of the historic building, which was built in the 1900s, will retain the cozy and funky character of Old Colorado City with a WeldWerks flair.

“Colorado Springs is an outdoorsy town so we want to make sure we’re adding conveniences and considerations for this crowd in our beer garden,” says Kristin Popcheff, director of operations at WeldWerks.

Perks for outdoor enthusiasts will include a dog-friendly outdoor area, summer events and lawn games. Outdoor areas will also include fire pits and patio heaters so beer drinkers can enjoy their libations outside all year-round. The brewery also plans to partner with local nonprofits and local businesses for beer dinners, fundraising events, and other collaborative events.

“The Dive had so much character and just speaks to us,” says Popcheff. “It’s certainly in need of a lot of love and TLC but we’re up for the challenge and see endless potential with this space.”

Groundbreaking is in September, the name of the new place will be announced soon, and we will let you know when the grand opening is announced - plans are for October.
Pikes Peak Brewing Opening 2nd Brewhouse in COS
- June 27, 2019 -
Chris Wright is not afraid to make good beer, lots of it, and he ramped up production at his Monument brewery last year to make and sell even more.

But it's not about how much, it's how good. Pikes Peak Brewing second location, in the 500 block of South Tejon in downtown Colorado Springs, promises something different in a market saturated with juicy, fruity, hoppy, even crazy beers.

From their news release:

Embracing its motto of “Life is better when lived together”, Pikes Peak Brewing will anchor a new market concept located in the 500 block of S. Tejon St in the Trolley building. Pikes Peak Brewing Lager House will produce small batch, hand crafted lagers, creating a place where the community can get together over a hand crafted beer. Included in the lager offerings will be custom, oak aged lagers made in horizontal, oak lagering tanks from Foeder Crafters USA. The Lager House will also offer signature beers from the original Monument brewery that was established in 2011.

The market, being developed by Niebur Development, will be a community of independent Colorado businesses collectively offering a place to eat, drink, shop and connect - a new and innovative concept for the growing community of Downtown Colorado Springs, and offer a vibrant live music venue.

The Pikes Peak Brewing Lager House will feature a view into the age old process of creating unique and historical lager beers and include a 2500 square foot rooftop patio with amazing vistas of the Front Range and Downtown Colorado Springs.

“With all of the development and growth, Colorado Springs is a very exciting place to be.” said Chris Wright, Founder and President of Pikes Peak Brewing Co. “We look forward to creating the first brewery in the Springs focused on brewing lagers and bringing our sense of community to NuSo (New South End) that has enabled Pikes Peak Brewing to thrive in Monument.”

The Pikes Peak Brewing Lager House is expected to open in by the end of 2019.

This should be fun. We will keep you posted on updates as opening day draws near.
Brewability Labs Moving to the BoB
- June 27, 2019 -
Brewability Labs started operations in Caution Brewing's old NE Denver location four years ago. The business concept was novel: hire adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, brew beer, and sell beer. It's worked well, and now Brewability Labs is moving to new digs.

New for Tiffany Fixter, Brewability Lab's owner. They're closed for now, and moving into 3445 South Broadway, former home to Brew on Broadway, or BoB. BoB's owner Paul Webster has been looking for a buyer, and the new facility will be called Brewability on Broadway. Plans were to be open by late summer.

Jonathan Shikes at Westword has written this fine piece, and we'll keep you updated as the new BoB nears opening day.

If you've got tickets, congrats! They sold out quick. But they plan to pour plenty of their own special beers on Friday, June 21, during regular business from noon to 10pm.

From their news release:

GREELEY, CO" WeldWerks Brewing Co. is pulling out all the stops for their upcoming, sold-out 2019 WeldWerks Invitational on Saturday, June 22. The majority of the festival’s total economic impact, which includes ticket sales, hotels, food and purchases made at Greeley businesses, is estimated at nearly $500,000 for the weekend. This year the WeldWerks Invitational will welcome 1,300 attendees and more than 200 brewers, staff, volunteers and sponsors.

While both Saturday sessions are sold out, beer lovers have an opportunity to try some of WeldWerks’ exclusive festival offerings at the brewery during regular business hours on Friday, June 21 from 12 to 10 pm.

The Friday release at the brewery will feature the following nine, new can releases:
Revenge of the Evil Haze Factory
Evil Pastry Stout Factory Strikes Back
Double Orange Creamsicle Milkshake
Peach Pie Berliner
Peanut Butter Cup Achromatic
Guava Lime Gose
S'more Like A Sour
Advanced Fluid Dynamics
You Can't Do That To IPA (collaboration beer with Cerebral Brewing)
Plus, three brand new, single-barrel variants of Medianoche will be tapped on Friday, created exclusively for the Invitational:
Bananas Foster
Coffee Rye
Coconut Brandy
“This Friday release is free and open to the public,” said Neil Fisher, Co-Owner and Head Brewer at WeldWerks. “So even if folks didn’t get tickets to the event itself, they can still get a chance to try super-limited releases exclusive to the festival.” To accommodate guests on Friday, WeldWerks will have ten taps and a dedicated area for to-go beer at the south bay door in the parking lot. Draft-only offerings will only be available inside of the taproom.
“Last year, proceeds from our inaugural WeldWerks Invitational totaled $40,000, which we distributed to five different Weld County non-profit organizations through our 501(c)(3) foundation,” said Fisher. “We hope to raise a similar amount for 2019.”

Odell Brewing Turns 30
- May 03, 2019 -
Doug Odell sent us a nice letter recently, and we'd like to share it with you:

Odell Brewing unofficially turned 30 years young on May 1st of this year. That was the date, in 1989, that we signed our first lease at 119 E Lincoln. However, our start actually occurred a year earlier when Wynne and I committed to start this brewery. We figured, what was the worst that could happen? If we failed, we knew we would have other opportunities. Fortunately, we did things right, the stars aligned, and here we are today.

Our initial choice for the brewery was Western Washington since we were living in Seattle at the time. But if you can believe this, we decided that the Pacific Northwest was saturated with craft breweries. I remember there were about nine at the time in Washington and Oregon. Now there are well over 600 breweries in those two states.

My sister Corkie suggested this beautiful, charming, college-town, just north of Denver where she was living. She promised us that it was exactly what we were looking for and even offered to help get the brewery up and running. So we packed up with our 15 month old daughter in tow, and moved from Seattle to Fort Collins. Corkie was right, Fort Collins was perfect for us.

It was just the three of us for the first few years, brewing, kegging, and selling those kegs out the back of my pick up. When things started to take off, we began hiring people to work with us. We quickly realized that these people were what made the brewery special. That still holds true today and will continue to be true for the future of Odell Brewing.

Then of course, we couldn’t have done it without you, all of our customers who turned into our community. The relationships that we’ve built over pints is what continues to inspire us to do what we love, brew beer that we want to share with others.

Sometimes I can't believe it has been 30 years. When you have something as good as Corkie, Wynne and I have had at our brewery, life just flows. Being able to build an evergreen company that invests in its people and community feels amazing. Thank you for coming along on this journey with us, we couldn't be more grateful for all your love and support. It's been an amazing 30 years and cheers to 30 more.

Cheers,

Doug Odell

By sales volume, Odell Brewing Company in Ft. Collins is the 23rd largest craft beer producer in the US. (Pennsylvania’s D.G. Yuengling & Son is Number One). But it hasn’t been about making more and more beer - better and better beer has always been the goal. Doug, Wynne and Corkie Odell are craft beer pioneers, and their beers helped establish Colorado as an early leader in craft beer culture.

If you haven’t visited their Ft. Collins facility, its worth a trip. Comfy indoor and outdoor seating provides a great view of the live bands, and you never know what new brew will be available. Tours can be arranged, and food trucks serve a rotating selection of beer-worthy eats.

There's extra incentive to go on May 25th, when their big Small Batch Festival celebrates 30 years with over 40 barrel-aged, sours, experimental IPAs, and a few pilots from their new RiNo Brewhouse. Two stages and music by Brent Cowles, Dragondeer, Sugarbirds, and Whiskey Blanket promise tuneful times, and tickets go quick.

Cheers to Odell Brewing! Thanks for all the great beers...
Factotum Brewhouse Building Is Up for Lease After Rent Dispute
- April 30, 2019 -
From an article in Westword by Jonathan Shikes:

For the past four years, Factotum Brewhouse owners Chris and Laura Bruns have unwaveringly cheered and promoted the sometimes overlooked Sunnyside neighborhood in north Denver. But the return on their emotional investment isn't turning out to be what they were hoping for: The owner of the building Factotum calls home, at 3845 Lipan Street, has put the space up for rent after failing to work out a continuing lease agreement with the brewery.

Siblings Chris and Laura explain that the landlord, Chris Boyer, is seeking a much higher rate than they can afford. “We have some options we're mulling around in our minds on what to do next. But at the new rates [Boyer] wanted versus what kind of traffic we have, it wasn't sustainable on our end," Laura says. "The current asking price is more per square foot than the many empty storefronts that are located on the much more heavily trafficked 38th Avenue.

"I personally know of brewery owners that have pulled out second and third mortgages on their house to keep up with rising rental rates in Denver," she adds. "That is not something we’re comfortable doing. In return for being great tenants for the past five years, we had asked for a couple of months of free rent with our renewal, something we were told was an industry standard, or a reduced rate for one year. Both ideas were nixed.

“I'm more than happy to speak with any brewery that might be interested in the space to talk about the kind of numbers/traffic our neighborhood sees," Bruns concludes. "The few that I thought might be interested in the space have all agreed that the rental rates are aggressive, but there's always someone out there with deep pockets."

Factotum will remain open for the time being, but will have to close up shop if a new tenant is found. Bruns would love to recruit “an entity that could use or rent the space during the day” (similar to the arrangement between Novel Strand Brewing and Queen City Collective Coffee in the Baker neighborhood), since Factotum doesn’t open until 4 p.m. on weekdays. So far, though, she hasn’t found a taker.

Boyer is a photographer who has worked in Sunnyside for two decades. “The situation isn’t ideal for either of us,” he says. “Factotum had the first rights to renew but have told me they haven’t been profitable enough to sign a new five-year lease. We are giving Factotum a fantastic deal on rent while we shop for a new tenant so they can save some money and so I don’t have an empty building. ... I really like Chris and Laura, so I’m sorry it hasn’t been as financially rewarding as they had hoped.”

The situation will also affect Lady Justice Brewing, which joined Factotum in the building last October by using an alternating proprietorship agreement. Lady Justice sells memberships to beer drinkers and donates the majority of its sales to local nonprofits for women and girls, but that brewery is growing and has been searching for its own taproom since before partnering with Factotum.

“We're bursting at the beer seams yet again and are ready for our next chapter,” says Lady Justice co-owner and head brewer Betsy Lay. “We will be moving out in June to focus our energy on finding and fixing up a home of our own. A fundraising campaign will be launched soon to help with these efforts.”

The Bruns may also try to move Factotum, if they can find an affordable space. For now, though, the two breweries will continue operating as normal, says Laura.

WeldWerks Taproom Coming to Colorado Springs
- April 08, 2019 -
Announcement today about a new taproom opening by one of Colorado's most popular craft beer producers:

WeldWerks Coming to Colorado Springs! From their press release:

"After four years of innovation and the creation of more than 100 unique beers in 2018, WeldWerks Brewing Co. is poised for growth with the opening of a taproom in Colorado Springs this July. The Greeley-based brewery, aims to bring both (more) handcrafted beer and community to Colorado Springs.

"For us, there's an intrinsic pleasure in putting down roots in communities that inspire us," said Jake Goodman, Director of Sales and Marketing at WeldWerks. "Colorado Springs has all of the amenities and excitement of a larger, up-and-coming city combined with the warmth, uniqueness, and authenticity of a tight-knit community."

Located west of Downtown Colorado Springs, the new WeldWerks location will set up shop at a former diner called The Dive (3043 W. Pikes Peak Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80904). The building's design and aesthetic will pay homage to the history of the town.

Brewing operations in Greeley will send suds to the WeldWerks Colorado Springs taproom, which will have a laid-back, family-friendly vibe similar to its Greeley counterpart. What will be different, however, are crafted experiences that are unique to Colorado Springs. The end result will be a lively community gathering place that seeks to weave itself into the fabric of the neighborhood as it has done in Greeley.

"We know and love the already-established Colorado Springs breweries and are looking forward to joining their ranks," said Goodman. "We want our presence to help continually shine a light on a great community!"

Details including the name of the WeldWerks Colorado Springs location and the date for their grand opening party will be announced at a later time.

New Denver Brewery- FlyteCo Set to Open doors soon
- February 27, 2019 -
An excerpt from the BusinessDen by Libby Flood:

A new brewery is preparing to take off in Berkeley.

Aviation-themed FlyteCo Brewing, once slated to be called Aero Craft Brewing, will open at 4499 W. 38th Ave. on March 2.

Inside, they've added a massive fuselage to hang over the main seating area, and plan to add tables fashioned from a plane tail. The bar is adorned with pieces of Marston Mat, steel material that was used to create temporary runways during World War II.

They've also installed a 15-barrel brewing system and four fermentors, which will supply the brewery's rotating menu of about 12 beers.

"It should allow us to keep up with demand, but we still have room to grow if we need it," Slingsby said.

The brewery's taproom, which will not serve food, will be open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day, and may stay open later on weekends.

The brewery was funded through a combination of bootstrapping, bank loans and investments, Slingsby said. They've hired eight bartenders, but O'Sullivan said for at least the first year, FlyteCo will be "the true definition of owner-operated."

To the owners, FlyteCo is about "sharing the wonder" of aviation, as well as providing a place for the community to hang out.

"We really wanted the space to be something that's very unique, that you haven't seen before," Slingsby said. "This is not something that you find everywhere."

They wanted a space big enough for aviation equipment, but could be easily broken up into a space suitable for live music or other events.

"The little details matter," Serani said. "The atmosphere, the ambience - that's what sets you apart as a taproom."
